Among Smokestacks and Construction Cranes – Cultural ecosystems in old industrial areas
22 October 2019
Talk
17.30-19.30 PM
Speakers: Stefania Zanna, Levente Polyak, Johan Berglund
Färgfabriken invites you to an evening of inspiration and discussion, based on our interest in our own area Lövholmen. Now we widen our horizons and allow ourselves to be inspired by examples from other places in Sweden and the world.
How are old buildings, cultural life and urban development connected? How can different social actors cooperate to create conditions for unexpected symbioses and how do you enable creativity to grow alongside the city? How can a site develop and be developed organically, dynamically or experimentally? Can value be measured in other ways than in purely economic terms?
You will take part of exciting examples of innovative, cautious, activist or inclusive projects, that have in various ways contributed to the development of a site or city, with a starting point in old industrial areas.
The discussion will be held in English.
The event might be filmed or photographed, please contact the fotographer on site or the organiser if you don’t want to be visible in film or photos. We will direct you to a seating where you won’t be visible for the camera.

Stefania Zanna will speak about the case study of Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa in Palermo, an industrial area that has been transformed into a development engine for the cultural life of the city. She has a PhD in territorial analysis, and master course certificates in economics and management of cultural heritage.
Levente Polyak will talk about non-speculative urban development and mechanisms to protect cultural, and social uses in urban regeneration processes. He will also discuss how different strategies can assure that the value created by cultural activities also benefits the cultural scene. Levente Polyak is an urban planner, researcher and policy adviser active in, amongst other places, Vienna. He has studied architecture, and city planning and holds a PhD in sociology. He has worked on urban regeneration projects in New York, Paris and Rome. He is editor for the magazine Cooperative City and co-founder of Eutropian Research & Action.
