Jury statement

For Magnus Larsson the big artistic opportunities lie in a very precise, almost photographic, manner of painting. In his human portraits he gracefully twists our perception by dislocating and changing what seems familiar at a first glance: a pair of eyes swell up to abnormal size, a mouth disperses and disappears, a figure’s shoulders are tightened to what is physically unreasonable. Magnus Larsson is awarded Beckers Art Award 2003 for his tranquil painting and his ability to give his audience a frightening image of how humanity can be abused and controlled in a world where flesh an blood are often substituted by manipulated signs.
