Magnus Larsson Beckers Art Award 2003
Main hall, Färgfabriken
Beckers Art Award 2003 of 150 000 SEK – which this year is given out for the 16th time – is given to the artist Magnus Larsson who was born in 1972 and graduated from Valand University Collage of Art in Gothenburg in 1999. At the exhibition at Färgfabriken Magnus Larsson shows a concentrated room-installation with a new series of paintings.
For Magnus Larsson the big artistic opportunities lie in a very precise, almost photographic, manner of painting. In his human portraits he gracefully twists our perception by dislocating and changing what seems familiar at a first glance: a pair of eyes swell up to abnormal size, a mouth disperses and disappears, a figure’s shoulders are tightened to what is physically unreasonable. Magnus Larsson is awarded Beckers Art Award 2003 for his tranquil painting and his ability to give his audience a frightening image of how humanity can be abused and controlled in a world where flesh an blood are often substituted by manipulated signs.
