A growing city – Our field is the future

The construction and real estate industry currently accounts for a large share of Sweden’s emissions (22%, Boverket 2021). A large part of this comes from new construction. Emissions are not decreasing, they are increasing, despite the industry being so good at talking about sustainability.

To meet our climate targets, both in Sweden and globally, we need to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions dramatically and quickly. At the same time, urban construction is an extremely slow business – the buildings we start planning for now will not result in emissions until well into the future. What emissions have we already locked in, and what future are we building? What are we going to do with all these buildings if our emissions contribute to making the whole world uninhabitable?

The project tries to sort out statistics, figures and curves, urban growth and emission reductions based on the City of Stockholm’s website Stockholm växer. During the open studio time, the mapping emerges.

Welcome to the work process and the conversation!

Behind the project is Tove Sjöberg, originally an interior designer, who has run Studio Feuer since 2009. There she has worked mainly with public environments – restaurants and places for culture. In recent years, her practice has moved more and more towards climate issues and various aspects of the transition of the construction and real estate industry, and she has been an active voice in the debate.

Tove has since the beginning been active in Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) Sweden, a non-profit organization working for sustainable building within planetary boundaries. There she has had a hand in the development of several different projects, including the TÄNK OM Prize, Byggutsläppslistan and Rivningskartan.

The project is implemented with the support of ARQ.

Open Studio

Open Studio is about exposing the creative idea when it is still in motion. For Open Studio, Färgfabriken invites various exciting creators to take over a project room for a short time. The project started in 2017 through the collaboration with the art and design group Very Very Gold.
