Network for Interinstitutional Architectures (NIA) – Nordic-Baltic network
The Network for Interinstitutional Architectures (NIA) is a collaboration between architecture centres, museums and festivals in the Baltic Sea region. The network explores new organisational models for reflection, resilience and innovation in the architectural field. Its five partners – Copenhagen Architecture Forum, Färgfabriken in Stockholm, Estonian Centre of Architecture, National Institute of Architecture in Lithuania and Architecture and Design Museum in Helsinki – collaborate to test new methods for navigating the interinstitutional space.
Background
Today’s cultural production is often characterized by a high pace, with demands for visibility, rapid reactions and constant renewal. NIA works to develop new conditions or even counter-conditions: slower and more sustainable collaborations, shared infrastructures for experimentation and exchanges that prioritize immersion, care and continuity over immediacy. The work focuses on three interconnected dimensions of institutional practice:
Ecological; by reducing waste through the reuse of materials and ideas.
Economic; by coordinating resources and developing shared infrastructures that support collaboration.
Curatorial; by creating shared narratives and long-term investigations that extend beyond national discourses.
The network considers the spaces between institutions – the administrative, curatorial and conceptual corridors – as active sites of production. Through coordinated exchanges and experiments, NIA strives to develop new organizational forms that strengthen the role of architecture as a coherent and reflective ecosystem in the Baltic Sea region.
We are pleased to introduce the Network for Interinstitutional Architectures and welcome colleagues, practitioners and institutions to follow the project’s development. Updates and documentation will be shared via the digital platforms of the project partners.
The project has received network support from the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture at Nordic Culture Point. Färgfabriken is the lead partner together with Copenhagen Architecture Forum.
Program
First meeting: Counterconditions and common infrastructures
Strategies for reusing materials and concepts across institutional spaces, to strengthen the ecological dimension, the economic dimension and the discursive dimension of the participating institutions.
Second meeting: Slow collaborations
How can we as institutions emphasize long-term research that prioritizes depth, innovation, and complexity in an age of hyperculture? A workshop with students from KTH was took place on the theme “What is an architecture exhibition?”
Third meeting: What does it cost?
What does it cost to be an institution? Thoughts beyond the economy. What new values can be jointly created for architecture in the Nordic and Baltic context?
