 - Challenges and opportunities in a rapidly changing world

In Symbiosis, different ideas and areas of knowledge meet to explore how a symbiotic thinking can inspire change and create the conditions for a better world!

While our societies rapidly and drastically transform, our knowledge about fundamental factors of transition continues to be fragmented. We are indeed capable of analysing them as single factors, however we still face the challenge of evaluating and describing them in different contexts, and creating connections between several different fields of knowledge and experiences.

By collaborating with people from various fields such as art, research, architecture, environmental sustainability, political science and economics, our ambition is to facilitate an experimental hub that explores and challenges drivers for for change.

We live in a world where many challenges meet us daily through a huge information flow. How can the planet be viable for future generations? We venture into new paths of thinking in order to find ways to understand and deal with the challenges our world is facing. Extensive research exist that has defined challenges and show different alternative solutions, but in order for real system changes to happen, we actually need to see relationships where one usually sees paradoxes and contradictions. There are many systems that are interdependent, for example in urban planning and community building in relation to the rapid urbanisation of the world today.

The term symbiosis is defined as a biological interaction in which one or more different organisms live together in a close relationship with some kind of effect, either positive or negative. The word comes from the Greek and can be translated into "living with".

Färgfabriken 25 years!

Through art, architecture and urban planning, Färgfabriken has for a quarter of a decade explored how these expressions, by themselves and combined, can contribute to new ways of interpreting a complex reality. Symbiosis is an exhibition project whose themes were inspired by Färgfabriken's activities over the years.

Exhibitions, seminars, debates and much more!

In September 2020, we open the doors to an exciting and variable exhibition that also serves as a workshop space and place for meetings, conversations and discussion.

Four themes creates a basic structure for the project.

  • De-signing ecology

    De-signing ecology
Our understanding and relation to the ecological system is drastically changing. Once we understood ourselves as being part of it, but today we posses the ability of de-signing the actual ecological system. The capacity of de-signing the ecological system is creating more and more fractions within our societies. Although we will be able to safe thousands of lives with such technologies, we are not able to escape from the demonic obsession of turning such technologies into weapons against each other. De-signing ecology is forcing us to evaluate our moral values as well as designing new hopes and inventing new fears.

  • Hinterlands

    Hinterlands

Cities grow and landscape continues to be used as sources for resources forthe ever growing global cities. What is the relation between the urbanand rural today? What kinds of ”hinterlands” appear among the growing global cities? Do we want Hinterlands? Is there any wilderness beyond our design of ecology?

  • Planetary Enterprise

    Planetary enterprise

How much are we aware that our everyday life is strictly connected to a planetary enterprise. Economical perspectives on environment and sustainability? What is the impact of planetary economy on democracy? Can democracy catch up?

  • Becoming Human

    Becoming Human

We are designing machines and intelligence, but eventually for whom? When will artificial intelligence no longer be artificial? When do robots replace our work. If so, do we become more human?
