The Nordic Third World Country – Panic or opportynity?

Seminar at Färgfabriken, Thursday Aug 26 2010, at 5.30pm

The seminar will cover the global economic crisis, and its relation with contemporary art. Trough a clear focus on Iceland, questions that are as vitally important for the rest of Europe are concretized and raised: how does contemporary art act and react on the global crisis? In which way does the recent years political and economical situation influence contemporary art? How, for example, is the relation between the private, the public and the grassroots initiatives affected?

This is the last day of the exhibition Guilt Trip (2007),with the Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson which has been screened during the summer in Färgfabrikens new project room. Both the exhibition and the seminar is part of the project “Nordens U-land? – Isländsk konst i kristid” (the Nordic developing country? Icelandic art in a period of crisis). The project will then be continued in Östersund at Färgfabriken Norr, where the group exhibition ”Nordens U-land? – Isländsk konst i kristid” is opened with a performance by Icelandic Love Corporation. In the final phase of the project, a publication consisting of documentations, transcribed conversations and commissioned texts will be produced.
